I had a critical MOS (91D)and was prohibited from flying by my hospital CO...otherwise, I'd have probably tried pulling flight duty with the 283rd
DUSTOFF that moved onto the 71st Evac grounds at about Christmas, 1969.
We got to know the crews very well. During the siege of Dak Seang, one of their birds got downed by "friendly" fire from ARVN troops trying to get out of the hot zone. I remember we had a lot of bad feelings toward ARVNs after that. I've written stories about my experiences at the 71st (www.streeper.com/71st), including what I remember hearing about that siege. It may not have even been Dak Seang, but it was during the first 4-5 months of 1970 in the Pleiku area.
I'd appreciate any help you might be able to provide. It would also be great to hear from some of the 283rd guys...we (the 71st gang) are having a reunion in San Diego in Sept. of 2010. More details will be posted on my
Web site.
Thanks for your service and your help,

I was never in the military but those who are and were are
heroes to me and my family. As such, I build models as one of my hobbies. Many of these models go to Recruitment Offices or Veterans. I have a UH-60 Blackhawk with Medevac markings already built that I would love to donate to your organization. Could someone e-mail me so I can learn how to go about shipping this model and to whom I should ship it?
Again, you are all heroes in my eyes and you have all my respect and admiration! |

Are there any good Veteran Service Officers (VSO) out there? We think so. In fact, we have a growing directory of VSOs nominated by veterans. These VSOs have demonstrated excellence in helping veterans secure service-connected claims and increase ratings. They return phone calls too. If you need a good VSO in your area visit our

Keep up the good work on this site. As stated previously, we added it to our monthly newsletter as a resource for all veterans. Thanks! |

Lara,
I'm very sorry to hear of your father's death. I've often thought about him over the years as he was a character & I've wondered whatever became of him.
I flew with your Dad at the 326th & partied with him over a wild two days in Da Nang. He & I were the high time pilots, I pulled over 90 days straight without a day off & your Dad probably did as well. Anyway the acting commander told us to get lost for two days before we killed ourselves from fatigue. We headed to Da Nang (off limits then) & had a most memorable time. Bill new the ropes.
First we hit the PX to lot up on gifts for presents, then scoured the city for a place to relax. Bill finally found what he was looking for, a former French
Legionnaire & used his French language skills to set us nicely in a hotel with all the comforts of home plus lovely ladies to keep us entertained.
Google my name, Stanley Marcieski, & you will find a link to a story I wrote about a mission in the A Shau during which your Dad was the aircraft commander & I was the co-pilot.
I never did ask him if he was sent to the 326th as punishment because when he was flying CH-54's he stole a 2 1/2 ton truck by airlifting it away for some purpose. Also he said when he was in Africa as an SF medic & that he & his team were accused of murder! Quite a story.
I will always remember your Dad as quite a character & good friend. |

pleasure of being introduced to many wartime veterans that I admired to this
date for what they taught me during my short stay in Germany. I flew missions with
CPT Hapner, CPT Wofford and CWO's Wright and Austin; my medics were Spencer, Kentross. I enjoyed the sites and fun times that we all had during
Oktoberfest.
May you all enjoy life and hopefully someone can share parts of my life that I forgot while stationed in Augsburg.

During my tour in Nam I flew with (then)
CPT Foust who is in our Hall Of Fame. He was also my C.O.
There are a number of others that I can picture but can't put names to them.
My medic was George (Shag) Shaunassy. |

CWO Rich Leonard is the one that comes to mind first. A

Hi, I'm Marc Cloutier's wife - and I'm sure the old timers will remember him. We have just returned home from many years in OH. It's so good to be back in my home state of Texas! My 'big
brother', Chet Duncan sent me an e-mail regarding Gayland Miles' passing - what a heartbreak. Gayland was a really nice person and I sure do hate to tell Marc he's gone... such a shame. I hate seeing some of the 'old timers' obit notices. I'm just thankful so many are still around though. |

I was lucky enough to be the only non-rated officer in the 247th Med Det following my Officer Basic Course training in 1979. I served under MAJ Rich Pecoraro -- a great aviator and officer who taught me enormously about service, steadiness, and humor -- and was privileged to become friends with CPT Pete Dorland, 1LT Ted Landry, 1LT Karen Anderson, and a group of incredible W.O.s trained in Vietnam and willing to share their wisdom with me. I never got to flight school, never held the stick, and never witnessed their heroism and skill under fire, but I was incredibly fortunate to receive training as a 2LT under them. I owe them more than I can express. |

NCOIC of Receiving
Section at 22nd Surgical Hospital in Phu Bai. Knew some of the 571st crew
members; CWO Bobby Walker, Jackson, Kelly (a crewchief if I remember right)
and a pilot who usually came in tail first on the helipad. I even went out a
couple of times during Hamburger Hill and once out to the USS Repose with a
Merchant Marine who had a severed arm. Tried to forget all those things so
some are a little vague. |

I was reassigned from the 2/17th
Cav, 101st Abn when the Cav stood down. I was a OH6A pilot as well as a H
model pilot. Since I had less than 6 months in country they sent me to the
236th Med Det at Red Beach just outside of Da Nang. Right after I got there
they painted our Hueys white and of course painted the Red Cross on them. |

Our unit was tasked with supporting
the Mariel boatlift in 1980. We also supported ops in Florida Eglin AFB. I
have almost 450 flight hours and 237 missions. We were a part of the MAST
program so we went to roadside pickups, neonatal transfers, etc. I was with
the 57th when we were the first Dust Off unit that transitioned into the
UH-60 Blackhawk. I also had the distinction and honor of briefing the
Command Sergeant of the United States Army.
Thanks for listening but those flight hours were some of the best,
fulfilling and exciting time I had in 22 years on active duty. |

I flew over 268 missions. Some were on Bragg but a large portion of my 400 + hours was spent flying into UNC Chapel Hill or Raleigh Durahm Med
Centers. We had cardiac monitors (albeit a life pac 5) and an isollett for premature infants. I also spent 94 days at Ft. Indian
Town Gap on Operation Mariel Boat Lift. I assisted inside the wire and helped quell the riots. I flew missions
associated with the North Carolina Military Assistance to Safety and Traffic.
I was sorry to see my old unit was merged with another, because I am very proud to have flown with THE ORIGINAL DUSTOFF!!

I do not remember much about who I flew with, but I know the crew we had was awesome and very blessed. I was with DUSTOFF with the 254th Medical Battalion at the Army Hospital in Nha Trang, South Vietnam from December 1967 to about June 1968 and then was transferred to Tuy Hoa at the only civilian war casualties hospital.
I heard that our crew/chopper were shot down after I left and that the co-pilot was left either paralyzed or crippled.
If you know anybody serving at that time in 'nam with this unit, please let me know ASAP.
I was proud to serve with you guys if any of you remember me. |
